Superintendent's Message

Dear Hesperia Unified Students, Families, and Staff,

As we reach the end of the first quarter, I am so incredibly grateful and proud for the wonderful start to the school year we have experienced. Our staff, students, families, and community partners have shown their dedication and commitment to cultivating connections and achieving excellence every day. The energy and enthusiasm at our school sites is both heartwarming and exciting. It creates great anticipation for the successes the year will bring. We have already seen an increase in attendance, a reduction in suspendable behaviors, and an overwhelming sense of improved school climates. A big thank you to our staff, students, and families for these successes!

As a district, over half of our students complete a career pathway before they graduate, building their readiness for post high school success. Nearly 70% of our students meet the requirements to go straight to a university, known as the A-G requirements, when they graduate. This is far higher than the state average of less than 50%. We are proud to offer countless ways for our students to connect and succeed; through sports, clubs, activities, and a variety of events and competitions. Our after school offerings for elementary students continue to grow, giving students fun and supportive learning opportunities that meet the needs of families. Speaking of growth, you may have seen construction at your child’s school. While other districts have seen a decline in enrollment, we are proud to maintain and grow as families honor us by bringing their children to our schools. In addition to overall growth, we are seeing significant growth in our TK (transitional kindergarten) program as well as in music and the arts. We are so proud to bring our students the programs they need and deserve.

Thank you for your continued partnership. I encourage you to connect with your child’s school, be a volunteer, participate in parent committees, and provide feedback through our surveys. With one-fourth of the year complete, may the rest of the year bring you and your family joy and success.

HUSD Celebrates Attendance to Improve Learning

By: Jacob Miles (4th Gr Mesa Grande), Stella Perea (4th Gr Mesa Grande), Elle Landrum (6th Gr Hollyvale), Nathaniel Molina (6th Gr Hollyvale) and Matthew Ledgard (6th Gr Hollyvale)
Mesa Grande Attendance Incentive Event

The Hesperia Unified School District wants our students to be at school every day. We know it is important for learning and for our student's social and emotional health. Our schools are doing many exciting things to encourage students to come to school everyday. Keep reading to hear about what Hollyvale and Mesa Grande are doing at their elementary schools.

At Mesa Grande, we have an ice cream cart. If our class has perfect attendance for the day we get to color in a letter on a poster with the word MUSTANGS. When we fill in all the letters we get a visit from Mr. Kirk and Mrs. James with the ice cream cart. Ms. Williams 4th grade class was the first class to receive the ice cream cart. The ice cream cart is to encourage students to come to school everyday. It is important to come to school to learn and make friends. That is why the perfect attendance ice cream cart is a thing at Mesa Grande Elementary.

Here at Hollyvale our school wants all kids to enjoy coming to school. At Hollyvale we have a paper that has HAWKS RISE! on it and for every day our class has perfect attendance we color in each letter. HAWKS RISE! Has a total of 10 letters.  When all 10 letters are colored in, we get a class reward.  We either earn otterpops or fresh popcorn. Sometimes we have ice cream too. We believe more people should attend school because it encourages other classes to want perfect attendance and get tasty meals with the support of nutrition services like Dominos pizza, popcorn and ice cream. Besides, when people don’t come to school they miss a lot of work.  Also, when people are absent from school they can miss special events like High Soaring Hawks. High Soaring Hawks is a fun experience because you get to leave class for an hour and do special activities. For example, we get to play fun games and be with our other friends from other classes. Sometimes, we eat pancakes with our Principal Mrs. Sayre and other fun stuff like that.

Lastly, all of these rewards should make everyone happy and want to come to school everyday.  School can be fun and exciting.  Even though we come to learn, we can still have a good time while we are here.  We think every elementary school should have a reward program for kids like ours.  It makes coming to school more enjoyable.  We like competing against other classes to see who will win.  When we heard our Principal announce to the whole school our class won the pizza party we cheered and screamed so loud.  We were so happy!  We just completed a second Hawks Rise! Paper and our next reward will be Otter Pops. Now, we are on our third paper of Hawks Rise!  We have had 21 perfect attendance days as a class.  We are pumped up and ready for more rewards! We hope other schools will also have fun rewards like Hollyvale Hawks.

Expansion of  the Arts (VAPA)

Hesperia Unified School District (HUSD) is embarking on an exciting new chapter in visual and performing arts (VAPA) education, spanning transitional kindergarten through 12th grade. Through ongoing funding, VAPA programs across the district are growing at every level. HUSD is creating a comprehensive, district-wide arts experience for all students by hiring additional elementary music and VAPA teachers and expanding the middle and high school course options. This investment is about more than just classes; it is about fostering creativity, enhancing academic performance, and developing essential life skills, such as collaboration and critical thinking.

By introducing students to the visual and performing arts early on, we can cultivate a genuine interest and create a direct pathway of engaged students who are prepared to join more advanced programs. A robust elementary arts program will not only support our high school music department but also other artistic disciplines, ensuring their long-term sustainability and success. By providing professional instruction and exposing students to various art forms, we can show them that their creativity and artistic talents can lead to fulfilling and viable careers.

Humphrey Brothers Make History at Sultana High and Shine on the National Stage

Few families in California sports history have accomplished what the Humphrey brothers did this past year. The 2024–2025 season saw all three brothers, Rocky Jr., Cael, and Jackson, capture Mojave River League titles, go on to become CIF Southern Section Individual Champions, and qualify for the CIF State Wrestling Championships, a feat believed to be the first time three full siblings have competed at the same CIF State meet in California history.

Before the state tournament, the Humphrey’s helped lead Sultana High to a CIF Dual Meet Championship. In a defining moment, all three brothers won their individual matches, with Jackson Humphrey, the youngest, clinching the title for Sultana in a dramatic final bout.

“It was one of those unforgettable moments in sports,” said head coach and father Rocky Humphrey Sr., who has led the Sultana wrestling program for 25 years and has a jaw-dropping 13 CIF Championships under his tenure. “Seeing Jackson finish it off for his brothers, for our team, and for this school, that’s something I’ll never forget.”

Their mother, Shanon Humphrey, a former elite athlete in Track & Field, Volleyball and CrossFit, is also a Sultana alumni, and in her third year teaching at the school. With their sons competing on the mat and both parents shaping lives in the classroom, the Humphreys have become a cornerstone of the Sultana community.

At the CIF State Championships, the brothers all delivered strong performances. Cael Humphrey placed 8th in the state, earning CIF medalist honors. Rocky Humphrey Jr. fought into the Top 16, closing a standout season. Jackson Humphrey cracked the Top 32, showcasing impressive potential for years to come.

Just 4 months after making state history, the brothers turned their attention to the national stage, representing Team California at the USA Wrestling Junior and 16U National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, one of the most prestigious youth wrestling events in the country.

Both Rocky Humphrey Jr. (Junior division 138lbs) and Jackson Humphrey (16U 126lbs) finished 2-2 in both freestyle and Greco-Roman against the best wrestlers the country has to offer. Cael Humphrey outperformed expectations in Fargo, competing in the 16U division at 138 pounds. In freestyle, he went 6-2, placing in the top 12 nationally. But it was in Greco-Roman where he made history again, finishing 7-1 and capturing 3rd place, earning All-American honors and cementing his status as one of the top young wrestlers in the U.S.

“Wrestling at Fargo is the pinnacle for high school wrestlers,” Coach Humphrey said. “For all three of my sons to be there, wearing California singlets and representing Sultana, it’s beyond anything I could’ve imagined when I started coaching 25 years ago.”

Whether it’s helping Sultana win a CIF Dual Championship, competing side by side at the CIF State Championships, or earning national honors in Fargo, the Humphrey brothers are not just athletes; they’re a family legacy and a source of pride for Sultana High School, the high desert community, and California wrestling as a whole.

With Rocky Jr. just graduating and moving on to wrestle for VVC, Cael entering his Junior season, and Jackson just beginning his sophomore season, the Humphrey story isn’t over. And if this season is any indication, their next chapters might be just as historic.

Coach Humphrey and the Sultans Wrestling program are hosting a wrestling camp for grades K-6th in October. If you are interested, please go to tinyurl.com/SHSWrestlingCamp2025 for more info.

HUSD Alumni Spotlight Series

Robert Stepanian; Mojave High School

By: Matthew Leon, Jordan McFarland, Sye Hughes, Melanie Azpeitia, Quinn Hutchins (MHS Journalism Students)

The Back to the Future: HUSD Alumni Spotlight Series is an inspiring program that connects current HUSD students with successful alumni. In each segment, current students interview alumni who have achieved great things, sharing their journey, challenges, and wisdom gained since graduation. The program celebrates local leaders and businesses while showing students that, with hard work and dedication, today's HUSD students can be tomorrow's success stories. In this segment, we highlight Mr. Robert Stepanian, a Mojave High School graduate and a veteran, who owns and operates several High Desert Horace Mann Insurance locations.

Can you tell us a little bit about what you do?

I'm in the insurance and retirement business for a company called Horace Mann. We help educators with their insurance needs and also plan for retirement. If they have kids, we prepare them for saving for college. I help people with anything involving financial services.

Did you make your career choice at Mojave?

No, my initial career choice was to join the Marines. So, at the time, insurance wasn’t anywhere in the picture.

What is some advice you would give to graduating students?

It’s funny—one of the exercises we did at Mojave was creating a goal folder. In class we sat down and wrote where we wanted to be in five years, and when I looked back on it I realized I accomplished everything I wrote down. So, my advice would be to have an idea of what you want to do, write down your goals, and let that be your guide.

How was your experience at Mojave?

I had no idea how high school credits worked until the Marines reviewed my transcript and told me I was technically still a freshman in my junior year. Thankfully, Mojave had a program that let me catch up quickly so I could pursue my dream of joining the Marine Corps. The experience there was incredible—everyone was so supportive. If you're a Mojave student with goals, the staff will absolutely help you achieve them.

What drove you to become who you are today?

After leaving the Marines, I planned to go into law enforcement, but my driving record kept me from being hired. Ironically, that same record led me to discover a career in insurance after a claims experience sparked my interest. I started at AAA, where I was recruited while buying a policy, and spent nearly seven successful years there before learning about Horace Mann. Fifteen years later, I now own and operate multiple Horace Mann offices.

What were the challenges that you faced?

There have always been challenges in my career, from the beginning until now, with constant hurdles and setbacks. The key has been learning how to find solutions and keep things moving forward. One of the hardest parts is knowing when to keep pushing and when it’s smarter to shift focus. Deciding where to invest your time and energy is often the biggest challenge of all.

What was it like growing up in the high desert?

It's day and night compared to now. I had humble beginnings when I was in the high desert as an elementary student. As a high school student I was working the whole time. We were pretty poor, so work took priority over school a lot of times. That's how I ended up at Mojave, to be honest. I wasn't ready to graduate from a regular high school. I've reached a level of success where life now is a lot different than how I grew up in a very good way.

What are the pros and cons of your job?

The desk work can be challenging because I sit a lot, but the biggest reward is being able to help people through major life events. In the insurance industry, it’s not just about policies—it's about being there for families during important and sometimes difficult transitions. Whether it's a new baby, a marriage, a separation, or helping a widow who’s never handled finances before, I get to guide people through it all. That meaningful connection and support is by far the biggest pro of what I do.

Who was your favorite teacher?

Mrs. Ball for sure. I spent a lot of time with her. I think she knew that I had a learning disability even though I was never diagnosed with ADHD or anything. She was very patient with me and took the time to help me out. Mrs. Ball, she left a lasting impact on me.

Can you share how living in the high desert has shaped your path to success?

The high desert is a place where you can really embrace being humble. I had a desire to get out of the HD and I think that's true for a lot of young adults. And even though now I am out of the high desert, because my roots are from here, it feels good to spend time here. It still has a small community feeling to it. When I spend time in the high desert, anywhere I go, I run into people that I know.

Mr. Robert Stepanian

The Hesperia Unified School District would like to thank Mr. Robert Stepanian for taking the time to interview and inspiring today's students for tomorrow's world.

A Season of Community, Fun, and Spooky Thrills!

The air is getting crisp, and the leaves are beginning to turn. And that means it’s time for the Hesperia Unified School District to celebrate the fall season! This year, we are thrilled to invite our entire community to a wide variety of fun-filled events happening at schools throughout the district. Our goal is to continue to serve as a hub for the community, providing safe and welcoming environments where students and their families can come together, connect with friends and neighbors, and make great memories.

As always, the highlights of our fall season is the return of our three spectacular haunted mazes, all created by the students and staff at our middle schools.

  • Ranchero Middle School's Haunted House: Get ready for a night of family-friendly games and Rattler scares on Friday, October 17th, at 6:00 PM. Ranchero's students have been hard at work creating a truly terrifying experience that will leave you breathless.

  • Cedar Middle School's Haunted House: The terror continues on Friday, October 24th, at 5:00 PM. The Spartans promise a chilling journey through their halls, with surprises around every corner.

  • Hesperia Junior High School's Haunted House: Just down the road, the scares start at 5:30 PM on Friday, October 24th. The Roadrunner's haunted house is sure to be a bone-chilling production that will cap off a night of spooky fun.

These events are a fantastic way to support our students while enjoying some spooky fun. We are so proud to open our school campuses to the community for these celebrations. We believe that by working together, we can create a stronger, more connected Hesperia. Please check the full HUSD 2025 Fall Festival calendar for dates, times, and details on all the other exciting activities happening this season. We can't wait to see you there!

Pancakes for Patriots: Honoring Our Heroes

By: Marcus Granado (6th Gr Topaz)

Every year on September 11th at Topaz Preparatory Academy, 6th grade students hold a Patriot Day assembly to remember and honor our first responders in the community, as well as those who made sacrifices 9/11, on the day of the attacks.

Our school hosts Pancakes for Patriots where we offer breakfast and coffee to veterans, current military, and other first responders. This year, Texas Roadhouse donated items for a raffle and Starbucks donated coffee to the event. In total, our 6th grade scholars served more than 80 patriots breakfast. Hesperia High School sang the National Anthem and Oak Hills High School Color Guard presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance for our school-wide assembly. Simon Lopez from our local Veterans Affairs office spoke, along with Officer Lacey from our own HUSD school police.

We hold this yearly assembly to honor 9/11’s first responders, the people who lost their lives on this day, and the tremendous impact that September day had on our country and our lives. On the day of 9/11, several planes flew directly into different places around the United States. Both of the Twin Towers, otherwise known as the World Trade Center, came down. The Pentagon, the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense, was crashed into. Flight 93, which was originally headed for the White House, crashed into a rural field in Pennsylvania. Within this one day alone, there were around 2,977 deaths, as well as many left injured and scarred from the losses that happened on this day.

In conclusion, we hold this assembly to remember and give respect to the events of 9/11. This assembly honors 9/11 by giving back to our veterans, current military, and first responder communities, while also allowing others to learn about the heroes we have today.

HUSD Band Spectacular 10/22/25: Uniting Students in a Celebration of Music

By: Brielle Flores and Ayari Aguirre (OHHS Yearbook Students)

Band Spectacular is a yearly event held at rotating locations, where students from various schools come together to perform a piece they have prepared. “The showcase is a line-up of amazing shows that we spent months creating,” said junior Trinity De La Cruz. All participating schools, including elementary, are able to play together and experience seeing other schools perform. “It’s cute seeing the little kids doing it because they seem so fascinated with you.
So it's like, comparing yourself then to now and being able to see my old directors [is a full circle moment]” added senior Suzzie Marquez.  Students show dedication by the days and hours they spend to perfect their performance. “We practice every Monday and Wednesday and recently some Fridays. On Wednesdays, our practices go from 2 to 6pm and on Mondays from 5 to 9pm,” stated junior Sarah Elizarraras.

OHHS Student playing guitar

Everyone shows their dedication not only through the countless hours they spend perfecting their performance, but also in the time and effort to make sure the event goes smoothly. “Each year a different high school hosts. This year, we are the hosts, so we get to have it here at Oak Hills, but that also means a lot more preparation in advance to make it happen” exclaimed band director Raymond Moreno. The students strive to show that band is more than just an extracurricular activity; it's also an opportunity to shine. “The feeling of playing with everyone really makes you feel like you fit in because there’s a lot of community between the band students,” said freshman Memphis Walker.

OHHS Drumline

The Band Spectacular is more than just a performance; it’s a celebration of music, teamwork, and the dedication of students from every level. From the youngest elementary players to seasoned high school performers, the event highlights how far students have come and the passion they pour into their craft. If you haven’t been before, Band Spectacular is definitely something worth attending. The 2025 Band Spectacular will be taking place on October 22nd at 6:30 pm at OHHS, and the entire community is invited.

The Cottonwood Elementary hallways were filled with enchanting storybook characters as they celebrated learning and fun at their annual Fairy Tale Family Fun Night! This event was another great example of amazing community events that make all HUSD schools a community hub of excitement and support. A huge thank you to everyone who joined the Coyotes, especially the amazing students who brought the magic to life with their fantastic costumes.

The night was a whirlwind of imagination and joy. We saw everything from brave knights to graceful princesses! Families explored the Scholastic Book Fair, hunted for new treasures, and struck a pose at the storybook photo booth, capturing memories that will last a lifetime.

But the fun didn't stop there! Little hands were busy with crafts, creating their own crowns and wands, while families teamed up for fun games and activities. It was an unforgettable celebration of reading, math, and creativity, proving that learning truly is magical!

But don't take our word for it, here are a few short summaries as written by our young Coyotes who were at the event:

So my favorite thing is everything. It was so fun to see all my friends and family. But my favorite was writing "Have you seen a villain?" It is with Mrs. DeCourcey. All my friends were there. It was so much fun. I got to play with them. It was fun to see my friends play with everyone. -Kaylee Rude 3rd Gr

I liked my family night. It was real fun and I made a shield with Mrs. Mac. Me and my friend played with the blocks and we did a scavenger hunt. In the end we got shaved ice. -Leo Alvarez 3rd Gr

My name is Luke and I am in 2nd grade at Cottonwood Elementary. I attended family fun night last week. I played Disney bingo. I also went to the book fair. I bought two books, tarantula and pet simulator. I had an awesome day. -Luke Hernandez 2nd Gr

My family fun night was the best. I liked it because I got to spend time with my mom and my brother. I think it was really fun. I loved that Mrs. Mac was there, it was the best night ever. I got to make a wand, I got to get a balloon, and I liked that there was story time with Mrs. Mac. It was really the best time ever. -Charlotte Wright 5th Gr

Santa Claus, along with Mrs. Claus and Buddy the Elf, will be arriving in style, escorted by our very own local heroes. Hesperia's first responders, including the Hesperia Unified School Police Department, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office, and the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

The event is free for everyone, and Santa and his friends will be handing out free candy and taking time to meet with the children.

Here's the schedule so you can plan your night of festive fun:

  • Hesperia Junior High School: Santa arrives at 5:00 p.m.

  • Ranchero Middle School: Santa arrives at 6:15 p.m.

  • Cedar Middle School: Santa arrives at 7:30 p.m.

This event is just one of the many ways that the Hesperia Unified School District is proud to serve as a hub for our community. We want to extend a huge thank you to all the people who make this possible, including our dedicated first responders, all the school site staff, and of course, Santa Claus himself. So mark your calendars for Friday, December 12th! We can't wait to see you there.

Mission Crest: Donuts with Dads

By: Liam Taylor and Abigail Mejia (Mission Crest Student Council Team)

Donuts with Dads was a huge hit at Mission Crest Elementary. In the beginning, there were just maybe 10-20 people waiting for the doors, but right when the doors opened, there were 50, then 60, then 70; the line seemed to never end. So many male role models showed up. It was a huge success. Everyone had so much fun; there was a huge line for the giveaways. And also a huge line for cornhole! This was such an unexpected event for Dads and their kids. The exercise between the role models/dads was a very special and moving experience. Everyone was having so much fun. Then, at the end, there was a raffle to give away to those in attendance! Mission Crest student council helped with this event under the supervision of our school liaison, Mrs.Taylor, and a group of parent volunteers. The student council was acknowledged by Mr. Juan Solis from the County of San Bernardino. He was very thankful and impressed by the hard work and dedication shown by the student council. He is the father engagement coordinator at Children's Network. This was a big hit for Mission Crest Elementary!

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence in HUSD

Hold on to your hats, Hesperia! The future is here, and it's powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Hesperia Unified School District (HUSD) is on a mission to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in a world shaped by technology.

HUSD staff is using AI to make learning more exciting than ever. Imagine talking to historical figures like George Washington or Patrick Henry, not only in a book, but also through an interactive technology experience. That's exactly what a fifth-grade class at Topaz Preparatory Academy did when Mr. Janzen had his students use digital interview AI bots of historical American Revolution figures. This kind of innovative learning shows cases how HUSD teachers and staff are using AI to inspire creativity and leadership.

Social Media Post on AI at HUSD

AI is changing everything, from the jobs of the future to the way we live. We believe every HUSD student should be ready to embrace this change, not fear it. And that's why the district is giving our students and teachers the knowledge and skills they need to use AI effectively and responsibly. We are excited about how our students will have a leg up on the competition when they enter the workforce with a better understanding of how to use technology to impact the future!
